WILKES-BARRE, PA - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins used a lengthy period of first-period power-play time to jump out to an early lead and never looked back Saturday night, taking a 7-1 win over the Philadelphia Phantoms at Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza.

The Phantoms took four penalties in the first 5:24 of the game, which gave Wilkes-Barre/Scranton momentum and set up its first goal. The Penguins were on a 5-on-3 when Noah Welch, stationed on the right post, shoveled in a rebound after goaltender Martin Houle had made a series of outstanding saves. The goal came at the 4:48 mark and the 1-0 lead stood through the first intermission.

At 8:25 of the second period, the Penguins doubled the size of their advantage with another power play tally. Kyle Brodzniak grabbed his first of the night when he came in on a two-on-one and roofed a puck perfectly over the glove of Houle into the upper right corner.

Frederik Cabana pulled the Phantoms within a goal at 11:18 with his first tally as a professional, firing home a wrist shot after goaltender Andrew Penner got his blocker on an initial blast by Sean Collins. It was the first assist as a Phantom for Collins, who signed a PTO with the team Friday.

But Wilkes-Barre/Scranton erased that momentum when Stephen Dixon scored just over a minute later at the 12:35 mark to make it 3-1. From there, the Penguins drove off with a late second-period goal from Tyler Kennedy, followed by third period goals by Brozdiak, Micki DuPont and Rob Schremp.

Houle took the loss with 29 saves on 36 Penguins shots, while Penner turned away 17 of 18 in earning the win.

Philadelphia returns home on Sunday, December 17 to host the Toronto Marlies in a 5:05 start at the Wachovia Spectrum. The first 4,000 fans 14 and under will receive a free set of Phantoms trading cards courtesy of Pepsi. Also at this game, the Phantoms will be auctioning off player handprints, with all proceeds benefiting the Children's Miracle Network at the Children's Hospital of Pennsylvania.
