Syracuse, NY (December 16, 2006) - The Syracuse Crunch, in partnership with Onondaga County, announced today that they have reached a long-term lease agreement for the Crunch to continue to play their home games at the War Memorial at Oncenter.
The lease, which is set for five-years and includes a an additional three-year Crunch option, was finalized in principal earlier today by Howard Dolgon, Crunch President and CEO and Ed Kochian, Deputy County Executive. As is club policy, terms were not disclosed.
As part of the lease significant upgrades for the War Memorial at Oncenter are in the works and Onondaga County Executive Nick Pirro said that his staff will be working with the Oncenter on a plan that will include replacing lower level seating, a new scoreboard, roof repairs and other items such as replacing stage seating which will improve the facility and generate additional revenue. The agreement also includes potential plans for the addition of luxury seating, a restaurant and improved training and locker room facilities. The County expects new ribbon lighting and backlit signage to be installed during the 2006-07 season.
"We believe this is a fair deal for both the Hockey Club and the County and a great deal for all Crunch fans and all those who attend events in the War Memorial," said Crunch President and CEO Howard Dolgon. "We now have a commitment for dramatic improvements and upgrades and at the end of the day I believe that is what all parties involved want."
Pirro said "The agreement we have reached is a winner not only for keeping Crunch hockey here but for our entire community; and the improvements we are committed to making in the War Memorial will preserve the dignity of the building's intent as well as making this facility one which will be enjoyable for team and fans alike."
"The Oncenter Complex is pleased with the new terms of the agreement and look forward to our continued positive and cohesive working relationship," said Oncenter President and CEO David Marnell. "Our employees also send their best regards to the team for a great season!!!"
Pirro expressed his appreciation to Deputy County Executive Edward Kochian and Oncenter President and CEO David Marnell for their part in the negotiations. Syracuse has played their home games at the War Memorial at Oncenter since the club's inception in 1994.
