Game Story
The Manitoba Moose (2-2-1) opened their season series against the Toronto Marlies (3-1-0) on Saturday at Ricoh Coliseum. Veteran Brooks Laich got the scoring started with a marker just 3:35 into the contest. Toronto added to its lead ten minutes later when the Marlies stole the puck in the Moose zone and Brendan Leipsic benefitted from a pretty passing play to make it 2-0. Manitoba got back into the game late in the period with a four-on-three powerplay. The excess of room on the ice gave Nic Petan space and time to skate around the zone before dashing to the net and picking his spot with 21 seconds left. The teams left the ice with Toronto leading 2-1. Eric Comrie made 10 saves in the period with Antoine Bibeau turning aside 12 Moose shots.
The Moose powerplay checked in again as Manitoba used the man-advantage to tie the game. Jack Roslovic dropped the puck for Kevin Czuczman who dragged to the faceoff circle before snapping a shot to the top of the net. Unfortunately for the Moose, the Marlies had a response waiting with their own powerplay opportunity at the 13:27 mark. Byron Froese redirected an Andrew Nielsen point shot past Comrie to push Toronto back in front. That score held until the break with the Moose outshooting the Marlies 22-17 through forty minutes.
The third period saw the Moose push for a tying marker. Bibeau held the line for the Marlies, making eight saves in the frame. The Moose found themselves with two powerplay opportunities in the final six minutes, but couldn't get the puck around the Toronto netminder. Froese iced the game into the empty net with 1:15 remaining as the Marlies held on for the 4-2 victory.
