October 22, 2016 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Monsters News Release
GRAND RAPIDS, MI - The AHL's defending Calder Cup Champions, the Cleveland Monsters, proudly powered by Constellation, were defeated by the Grand Rapids Griffins at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, MI on Saturday in the first of 12 meetings between the two teams this season. With the loss, the Monsters fell to 2-1 overall this season and with a .667 points percentage, currently sit alone in third place in the AHL's Central Division standings.
After the first period slid by scoreless despite a +9 shot differential (16/7) for Cleveland, the Griffins rattled off a pair of even-strength tallies in the middle stanza, from former Monster Ben Street at 13:02 and Tyler Bertuzzi at 19:36, to claim a 2-0 lead heading into the third.
In the final frame, the Monsters came storming back with back-to-back goals from Alex Broadhurst, at even-strength on feeds from Aaron Palushaj and T.J. Tynan at 12:51 and with a six-on-five advantage from Dean Kukan and Ryan Craig at 19:15. Despite stringing together a series of quality scoring chances in the final minute of play, the Monsters fell short in their first road game of the season despite a 29-save performance from Anton Forsberg between the pipes. Jared Coreau earned his league-leading fourth win of the season in net for the Griffins by virtue of a 37-save performance.
Next up for the Monsters, it's a Sunday road clash vs. Cleveland's Central Division rivals, the Rockford IceHogs with full coverage, live from the BMO Harris Bank Center in Rockford, IL, underway at 5:00 pm on 99X and the Monsters Hockey Network.
