Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Kevin Porter led the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to a 3-1 victory over the Syracuse Crunch on Saturday night at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.
Porter factored in on all-three of the Penguins' goals, and had the unique distinction of scoring two shorthanded goals in the same game, the first time that's happened for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton since Dec. 23, 2006.
It took until 8:11 of the second period for the game's first goal to be scored, when Porter was sprung on a shorthanded breakaway and picked the corner over the glove of Syracuse goalie Adam Wilcox.
One minute and 19 seconds later, on a different penalty kill, Porter gave everyone at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza a case of déjà vu by scoring a nearly identical shorthanded goal, giving the Penguins a 2-0 lead.
On the same man advantage that Porter scored his second shorty, Cory Conacher notched a power play goal for Syracuse, cutting Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's lead in half, 2-1. Concacher's tally was the first power play goal the Penguins allowed all season.
Dominik Simon added an insurance marker for the Penguins 15:45 of the third period, making it 3-1 in favor of the home team. Porter recorded an assist on Simon's goal, as did Reid Gardiner for his first professional point.
Casey DeSmith stopped 26 shots, earning the win in his season debut with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, while Wilcox made 28 saves at the opposing net.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's next game is its first road game of 2016-17 and takes place at 5:00 p.m. tomorrow, Sunday, Oct. 23, against the Hershey Bears at Giant Center. The Penguins' next home game is Wednesday, Oct. 26 against the Albany Devils.
Individual tickets for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton home games can be purchased at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza box office, through Ticketmaster.com, or by calling 800-745-3000.
