Madison Mallards News Release
MEQUON, Wis. - The Madison Mallards (33-20) were defeated 2-0 by the Lakeshore Chinooks (25-28) on Monday at Kapco Park. The Mallards mustered together just four hits, coming from three different players and ended up stranding eight on base in a swift two-hour, 11-minute contest.
Lakeshore got the first run of the game in the third inning on an RBI single from Daryl Myers (Benedictine College) and extended the lead to 2-0 in the fifth on a sacrifice fly from Myers. With dominant Chinook pitching, those two runs proved to be enough for the night.
Jarod Large (North Iowa Area CC) earned his second win of the year after going six strong innings on the mound for the Chinooks. Large allowed just two hits and struck out four.
Trevor Marreel (Washburn) took a tough-luck loss for the Mallards after crafting six dominant innings of his own. Marreel yielded just one earned run. Brendan McGuigan (Richmond) notched the save for Lakeshore.
Turning Point
In a 1-0 game, Myers' sacrifice fly gave the Chinooks some breathing room in the fifth inning. Although it only made it a two-run lead, that was adequate insurance for the dominant Chinook pitching staff. The Mallards were unable to manufacture any runs offensively and left four runners in scoring position.
Top Mallards
One outing after getting roughed up, Marreel bounced back with six solid frames on the bump. The offense was unable to produce and Marreel, as a result, was forced to don the loss.
Drew Benefield (Louisville) was a bright spot in the offense for the Mallards. The slugger finished 2-for-3 and reached safely three times. He was the only Mallard with multiple hits.
Nick Figus (Illinois Wesleyan) went 1-for-2 and was also hit by a pitch. He collected his second double of the season and had the only extra-base hit of the game for either side.
