The Lakeland Magic, NBA G League affiliate of the Orlando Magic, defeat the Rio Grande Valley Vipers 118-98, in front of a home crowd at the RP Funding Center.
Six Lakeland players scored in double figures lead by BJ Johnson who poured in 30 points. Braian Angola, with his first start of the season, finished with a double-double scoring 15 points and 11 rebounds, while recording a game-high plus/minus of +40. John Petrucelli was just shy of a triple-double with 19 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists. Amile Jefferson secured his tenth double-double of the season with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Troy Caupain had 12 points on the night while Antonio Campbell came off the bench to score 11 points and 5 rebounds.
For the Vipers, Gary Payton II had 27 points and 7 rebounds. Brandon Sampson scored 20 points and 8 rebounds. Tim Bond had 15 points and 9 rebounds and Bruno Caboclo scored 15 points and 8 rebounds in tonight's contest.
Lakeland was in a rhythm early leading by eight points after the first quarter. They would continue to outperform the Vipers in the second quarter extending their lead to 17 points at the half. The Vipers came out strong in the third quarter and would cut the Magic lead to seven points but Lakeland hit another hot streak outscoring the Vipers 32-19 in the fourth quarter for the final score 118-98. The Magic outperformed the Vipers from the three-point range shooting 38.7 percent to the Vipers 28.6 percent.
Lakeland will now travel to Las Vegas for the G League Winter Showcase on Wednesday, December 19. The game will be held at the Mandalay Bay Events Center at 5:30PM, as the Magic face off against the Maine Red Claws.
