Lynx Come Back But Still Fall Short 4-3
October 22, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release
The Augusta Lynx made a valiant comeback attempt on the Gwinnett Gladiators Friday night, but still fell short in a 4-3 decision before 5,664 fans at the Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center.
The Lynx took it to the Gladiators in the first few shifts of the opening frame, but eventually it would be Gwinnett breaking through first with Jeff Campbell's goal at 12:44 from Mike Stathopoulos. The Gladiators would strike again at 14:38 as Peter Flasche tipped a Joe Bourne shot past a screened Jason Saal to make it 2-0 Gwinnett at the close of the first period of play.
In the second stanza, the Gladiators managed another pair of goals, this time from familiar names. Rick Emmett took a drop pass in the high slot from Stathopoulos and beat Saal over the shoulder for a 3-0 Gwinnett lead at 9:21, followed at 12:44 by a Cam Brown power play goal that would mark the end of the night for Saal, who was replaced by Matus Kostur after giving up four goals on 25 shots. Meanwhile, Augusta finally found some offense from Matt Dzieduszycki as he outraced two defenders for a loose puck and broke in on rookie starter Adam Berkhoel, beating him to bring the game to 4-1 after two periods of play. Todd Bennett and John Cronin added the assists.
The Lynx continued their momentum in the third when Josh St. Louis scored on a great deflection of a Sean Connolly shot at 3:31 to make it a 4-2 game. Then Augusta closed within one when rookie Ken Magowan scored his first professional goal from Goulet and Chris Hajt at 11:07, and the race was on. Time and time again the Lynx would threaten, but somehow were repulsed each time until the game ended. Kostur stopped all 7 shots he faced in relief of Saal, while the Lynx poured 17 third period shots on Berkhoel, who stopped 15 of them.
The Lynx head out for their first road contest of the year Saturday night in Florence, SC against the Pee Dee Pride. Game time is 7:30 pm, with the pre-game show starting at 7:05 pm on your new home for Lynx Hockey, NEWSTALKSPORTS 1630 AM.
