San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO â The San Diego have acquired left-winger Scott Borders from the Fresno Falcons, head coach Martin St. Amour announced Friday. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. St. Amour also announced that both Sylvain Deschatelets and Sean Murphy were placed on the injured list.
Borders, 23, comes to San Diego after spending the last two-plus seasons with Fresno. Last season he notched 30 points (10g, 20a) and 111 penalty minutes. In 2002-03, Borders' first full professional season, he recorded a career-high 38 points (19g, 19a) and 175 penalty minutes. Borders began his career at the end of the 2001-02 season and was a member of Fresno's Taylor Cup Championship run.
The 6-foot-2-inch, 212-pound native of Bonnyville, Alberta was selected to the West Coast Hockey League's All-Rookie Team in 2002-03 and ranked second among all WCHL first-year players in points. Before turning pro, Borders played five years in juniors.
Deschatelets, who is still recovering from off-season wrist surgery, was placed on the 30-day injured list. The 24-year-old center tied Mark Pederson for the team lead with 81 points last season and led the ECHL with a 23-game point streak.
Murphy was placed on the injured list with a sore groin. The 26-year-old rookie defenseman played the last four years at York University.
The Gulls open the season Friday on the road against the Long Beach Ice Dogs, with game-time scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The home opener is Saturday against the Fresno Falcons at 7:05 p.m. Rally towels, brought to you by ROCK 101 KGB (101.5 FM), will be presented to first 10,000 fans in attendance.
