Columbia Fireflies News Release

COLUMBIA, SC - The Fireflies had the tying run at second base in the bottom of the ninth inning against Augusta on Saturday, but the comeback fell one run short. Columbia was defeated by the GreenJackets, 3-2, at Spirit Communications Park. Vicente Lupo helped direct the come-from-behind effort, the outfielder scored a run in the eighth inning and finished the night with two hits, including a double.

The Fireflies entered the bottom of the eighth with no runs and just three hits to show for. The home team quickly cut into the 3-0 deficit. With one out in the frame, Dash Winningham reached on a fielder's choice and later moved to third when Lupo doubled. The next batter, Ivan Wilson, chopped a slow roller to Augusta's (3-0, 39-34) short stop, Lucius Fox, and beat out the throw to first base. That plated Winningham.

J.C. Rodriguez's RBI ground out pulled Columbia (0-3, 36-37) within a run. In the ninth, Joe Tuschak singled and reached second base, but was stranded there. GreenJackets hurlers Domenic Mazza (W, 2-0) and Ryan Koziol (S, 1) combined to strike out nine Fireflies hitters.

Augusta scored its three runs in the sixth inning. Junior Arias clubbed a three-run home run off of Kevin Canelon (L, 4-5). Canelon still last six innings and registered his eighth quality start of the season in 13 appearances.

The series finale between the Fireflies and the GreenJackets is on Sunday at 5:05 p.m. Right-hander Tyler Badamo (3-4, 3.96) goes for Columbia and faces righty Matt Stoller (1-0, 8.36)

You can watch the action starting at 5:00 p.m. on MiLB.TV and listen in on WGCV 620 AM, 105.1 and 96.3 FM, ColumbiaFireflies.com and the TuneIn Radio app starting at 4:45 p.m.
