Intimidators Use the Force to Make It 3 Straight

Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - The force was strong with the Kannapolis Intimidators on Saturday night at Intimidators Stadium supported by Carolinas HealthCare System, as a sellout crowd of 4,907 were treated to a 2-1 win over the Delmarva Shorebirds on Star Wars Night.

The crowd was the biggest of the year for the Intimidators and the largest since a July 21 game in 2012 against the Charleston Riverdogs that drew 4,935.

Johnathan Frebis did not disappoint the capacity crowd earning his third win of the year against the Shorebirds (0-3) with six strong innings of work.

Frebis (5-6) snapped a personal three game losing streak by consistently navigating Shorebird rallies to strand eight men on base during his time out. Over his six inning performance, he scattered six hits, walked three, and struck out three to earn the win.

Delmarva's only run of the night came in the top of the third inning. Cedric Mullins doubled to open the inning, all part of a 3-for-5 night for the Shorebird centerfielder, and scored two batters later on a Yermin Mercedes sacrifice fly to center for what proved to be the only run of the night for Delmarva.

Kannapolis (3-0) lead throughout, after jumping on Shorebird's starter Brian Gonzalez for a run in the first and second inning.

Seby Zavala drove in the first run of the night with a two-out double to right center that platted Tyler Sullivan. An inning later, Micker Adolfo leadoff with a double behind the bag at first and scored three batters later when Grant Massey singled him home with a single to right.

Tanner Mendonca and Ian Hamilton combined to shutout the Shorebirds from the seventh inning onward. Hamilton made his professional debut in the ninth inning, and struck out Cedric Mullins to end the game and record his first save of his pro career.

The Intimidators win makes it three straight to open the second half of play, and gives them their first series win since taking two of three from the Riverdogs in Charleston June 2-4.

The Intimidators continue the seven game home stand with the final game of this four game set against the Delmarva Shorebirds Sunday night at 5:05 pm. Kannapolis will send RHP Zach Thompson (5-2, 2.96 ERA) to the mound against Delmarva's RHP Michael Costello (0-0, 2.16 ERA). Sunday are Kid's Day at Intimidators Stadium presented by Cornerstone Church, with a pregame autograph party, postgame kids run the bases and carnival games all game long.
