Charleston RiverDogs News Release
ROME, GA - After a slow start out of the gates from the All-Star break, the Charleston RiverDogs found a second wind, picking up their first win of the second half in an 8-5 victory over the Rome Braves on Saturday night at State Mutual Stadium.
Charleston (43-29) grabbed an early 4-0 lead after getting to Ricardo Sanchez (3-6) in the second, a lead they would not give up. Charleston outfielders Jhalan Jackson and Jeff Hendrix each singled with one out to put runners at the corners before Alex Palma grounded to third and Jackson was cut down at the plate. Gosuke Katoh followed up with a single to right to score Hendrix, and Cesar Diaz would make it a crooked number with a three run blast to left.
Rome (29-43) answered back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second, and would keep answering with their bats throughout the night to stay in the ballgame. Justin Ellison drew a leadoff walk before Jonathan Morales doubled to left to make it 4-1. With two outs and the second walk of the inning issued, Yeudi Grullon singled up the middle to cut the lead to two.
In the third Kyle Holder laid down a bunt single to lead off the inning and Audie Afenir singled to right with one out to put runners on first and second. Jhalan Jackson followed suit with an RBI knock that pushed Charleston's lead to three. Alex Palma hit a sac fly to left that made it 6-2.
Daris Vargas would hit his pitch count with two outs in the fifth, coming up one out shy of qualifying for the win. The Dominican righty allowed two runs on six hits while walking four and striking out one.
A leadoff walk by reliever Hobie Harris (1-0) would come around to score in the sixth after Luke Dykstra singled to left with two outs. Harris finished with two runs allowed on two hits and three walks while striking out three to pick up his first win of the season.
In the seventh Holder singled for the second time and would score on a one out double to left center by Afenir that brought the score to 7-3.
In the bottom of the seventh Jonathan Morales walked with one out and Rome first baseman Carlos Castro doubled him home to cut the lead to three once again at 7-4.
The RiverDogs and the Braves traded runs again in the eighth as a Hoy Jun Park single brought home Katoh who tripled to lead off the frame. In the bottom half Austin Riley doubled off of RiverDogs closer Andrew Schwaab to push the score to 8-5.
Schwaab worked the final two innings of the ballgame, allowing a run on three hits in a non-save situation while striking out one.
Hendrix was impressive in his second game off the disabled list, reaching on all five plate appearances, going 3-for-3 with a pair of walks.
