Delmarva Drops Third Straight One-Run Affair

June 25, 2016 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

KANNAPOLIS, NC - The Shorebirds have gotten off to a stomach-turning start in the second half of the season with a third consecutive one-run loss on Saturday night at Kannapolis. Brian Gonzalez and Jesus Liranzo allowed just one base-runner from the third inning on, but the Shorebirds couldn't bring home a second run in a 2-1 loss at Intimidators Stadium.

Kannapolis (27-46, 3-0) got on the board with a run in both the first and second innings when Gonzalez (5-4) seemed to be laboring a bit. Seby Zavala cracked a RBI double in the first inning and Grant Massey added a RBI single in the bottom of the second.

The Shorebirds (42-30, 0-3) scored their only run after Mullins opened the third with a double. He moved up on Ryan Mountcastle's grounder and scored on Yermin Mercedes' sacrifice fly. But the 'Birds couldn't push anything else across, including when they had the bases loaded in the fourth. Mullins led the way offensively with a 3-for-5 night.

The Shorebirds still have a chance to salvage the series with tomorrow night's 5:05 pm finale. Mike Costello is expected to make his second start of the year for Delmarva. Brendan Gulick will have the broadcast beginning with Shorebirds On-Deck at 6:50 pm on Fox Sports AM 960 and online at theshorebirds.com.
