Asheville Scores Late to Stop Power

(Asheville, NC)- The West Virginia Power dropped game three of the four game series against the Asheville Tourists 8-4 Saturday night at McCormick Field. The Power had a 4-1 lead late, but the Tourists scored seven runs in the final three innings to gain the victory.

The Power jumped to an early lead in the third on an RBI single by Casey Hughston before the Tourists tied the game in the bottom half.

It remained 1-1 until the fifth. With Ryan Nagle at third and John Bormann at first, Alfredo Reyes laid down a safety squeeze, bunting the ball up the third baseline which allowed Nagle to score just ahead of the throw home.

West Virginia expanded their lead in the sixth. With one out the Power took four consecutive walks to force in a run and Bormann hit a sacrifice fly to cap the club's scoring, and give them a 4-1 advantage.

Asheville stormed back in the next three innings, scoring seven times. After a run in the sixth, Scotty Burcham tied the game with a two-run double in the seventh and the Tourists broke the game open with four runs in the eighth to take the lead, highlighted by five consecutive base hits.

Alexander Guillen (1-0) tossed one and a third scoreless frames to seal the 8-4 win.

Power starter Bret Helton did not factor in the decision, surrendering four runs in six and a third innings. Daniel Zamora (3-2) was charged with a blown save and took the loss, allowing four runs and six hits through his one and a third innings.

Ryan Nagle was the only West Virginia batter with multiple hits, finishing 2-3, with four other players accounting for one RBI each.

West Virginia and Asheville play the final game of the regular season series between the two clubs on Sunday afternoon. Gage Hinsz takes the mound for the Power, opposed by Tourists starter David Hill. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 P.M. at McCormick Field.
