Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
GREENVILLE, SC - Jose Taveras struck out a franchise record 15 hitters over eight innings in leading the BlueClaws to a 5-3 win over Greenville on Saturday night at Flour Field.
Taveras, who improved to 3-6 on the season, fanned six in the first four innings, and nine over the last four innings, going eight and allowing just one run on two hits with no walks. He is just the third BlueClaws pitcher to finish eight innings in a game this year.
Robinson Tejeda (2001), Jason Knapp (2009), and Trevor May (2010) each struck out 14 in a game, but Taveras is the first BlueClaw to ever fan 15 opposing hitters in a game.
Leading 5-1, Alberto Tirado came on for the BlueClaws in the ninth, walking two and allowing a two-out two-run double by Kyri Washington to pull the Drive within two runs. Manager Shawn Williams summoned Zach Morris, who struck out Mitchell Gunsolus on three pitches to end the game and earn his second save of the season - both of which have come in this series.
The win puts the BlueClaws at 2-1/31-41 on the year while the Drive fall to 1-2/38-34. Lakewood leads the season series from Greenville 5-2.
Scoreless into the fifth, the BlueClaws opened the scoring in the top of the fifth. With two out and one on, Anderson Espinoza was removed in favor of Marc Brakeman, who walked Grenny Cumana and then gave up a two-run triple to Josh Tobias to put the BlueClaws up 2-0.
Jose Taveras retired the first 13 hitters he faced, but Mitchell Gunsolus doubled in the fifth and scored on an RBI single by Tyler Spoon that sliced Lakewood's lead to 2-1.
The BlueClaws would add two more in the seventh - an RBI double by Grenny Cumana and an RBI single by Josh Tobias - and a run in the ninth - on another RBI double by Cumana.
Cumana led Lakewood with three hits and has hit safely in 13 of his last 14 games. Zach Coppola had two hits as did Josh Tobias, who drove in three of the five BlueClaws runs.
The series with the Drive concludes on Sunday at 4:05 pm. RHP Drew Anderson (1-1, 1.69) starts for Lakewood against Greenville RHP Roniel Raudes (6-2, 4.04).
