Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - Behind a 15-strikeout performance from starting pitcher Jose Taveras, the Lakewood BlueClaws defeated the Greenville Drive 5-3 on Saturday night at Fluor Field.
Taveras (3-6) worked eight innings in the game for the BlueClaws (2-1, 31-41), and seven of those were perfect. He allowed just two hits and one run while setting Lakewood's franchise record for strikeouts.
For four innings, Drive (1-2, 38-34) starter Anderson Espinoza traded zeroes with Taveras before Lakewood struck for two runs in the fifth. Espinoza (4-6) allowed a single in the inning before leaving the game after throwing 92 pitches. After Marc Brakeman issued a walk, Josh Tobias lined a two-run triple into the right field corner to put the BlueClaws ahead.
The Drive got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Mitchell Gunsolus lined a one-out double to left-center to end Taveras' perfect effort to that point, and Tyler Spoon came through with an RBI single to cut Lakewood's lead in half.
RBI hits from Grenny Cumana and Tobias in the seventh extended the Lakewood lead to 4-1, and Cumana added an RBI double in the ninth for an insurance run.
A Kyri Washington two-run double in the bottom half of the ninth brought the tying run to the plate, but Zach Morris recorded a strikeout, Lakewood's 18th of the night, to end the game and record his second save.
The series concludes with a 4:05 PM first pitch on Sunday afternoon at Fluor Field. The pitching matchup will see Drive right-hander Roniel Raudes (6-2, 4.04) opposed by BlueClaws right-hander Drew Anderson (1-1, 1.69).
