Luplow Knocks Tribe to Thrilling Win in Toledo

Indianapolis Indians News Release

TOLEDO, OH - The Indians scored three runs on a two-out single by Jordan Luplow in the ninth to rally past the Mud Hens on Monday, 5-4. The clutch base hit initially leveled the score at four but heads up baserunning by Luplow toward second and Christopher Bostick to the plate gave Indy its first lead of the night.

Indianapolis (41-33) improved to 7-4 against its IL West rival this season, using late dramatics against closer Junichi Tazawa to steal the series opener. The Taiwanese right-hander set himself up for trouble by walking Max Moroff, Jerrick Suiter and Bostick, leading to Luplow's two-run single over a leaping Pete Kozma at shortstop into left.

The throw by Christin Stewart to the plate skipped away from catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, prompting Luplow to race towards second base. The throw to second then alerted Bostick to hustle home, and the subsequent relay back to the plate was late, giving Indy a 5-4 advantage.

Tanner Anderson (S, 1) escaped a hit batter and single to start the bottom of the ninth thanks to a 6-4-3 double play and deep flyout.

Entering the game, Toledo (44-31) was a perfect 40-0 when entering the ninth inning. Indy won for the third time already this year when trailing going into the ninth; the Tribe had just one such victory in 2017.

The Mud Hens' first two runs of the game came on two-out solo shots in consecutive innings against Nick Kingham. Former Indian Edwin Espinal took him deep in the second, golfing a 2-2 curve beyond the left-field wall. One inning later, Stewart hooked his league-leading 15th dinger inside the right-field foul pole.

The Indians clawed back with single tallies in the fourth and sixth, both ignited by Kramer's extra-base hits. The Tribe second baseman tripled with one away in the fourth and scored on a Wyatt Mathisen two-strike single to right. Two innings later, Kramer doubled to deep right and scored on a Moroff single to even the score at 2-2.

Toledo sent eight batters to the dish in the seventh without recording a base hit. Dovydas Neverauskas walked four in the frame and five overall, matching a career high. He lost Ronny Rodriguez on a 3-2 pitch to force home the go-ahead run, and Damien Magnifico uncorked a wild pitch later in the inning to make it 4-2.

Neither starter factored into the decision. Kingham fanned nine over 5.2 innings of two-run ball, and Alexander yielded two runs on nine hits in 5.1 innings of work. He walked two and struck out six.

Enny Romero (W, 1-0) struck out two in a scoreless eighth to earn the win.

Newman and Lavarnway both extended their hitting streaks to 12 games apiece. Newman also swiped his league-leading 17th and 18th stolen bases in the win.

The victory brought Indy within 2.5 games of Toledo in the IL West while maintaining its 2.5-game wild card lead over Norfolk.

The Indians and Mud Hens play game two of their series on Wednesday at 12:05 p.m. ET. Tribe right-hander Tyler Eppler (7-3, 3.41) will face Toledo righty A.J. Ladwig (5-3, 5.74).
