Ninth Inning Comeback Not Enough

Toledo, Ohio - The first place Toledo Mud Hens rallied late, but it was not enough as the second place Indianapolis Indians claimed a 7-1 victory Tuesday afternoon at Fifth Third Field.

Chad Huffman launched his seventh home run of the year in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Hens avoided getting shutout. Kade Scivicque and Jason Krizan both went 2-for-4 in the Mud Hens (44-32) loss to Indianapolis (42-33).

Indianapolis struck first on a two-run home run by Jordan Luplow with two outs. Max Moroff led off with a single and was bunted over to second base. Luplow then lifted a ball to deep left field to give the Indians a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the third inning, Indianapolis recorded four hits and a walk to produce five runs and take a 7-0 lead. A.J. Ladwig's day came to an end after allowing seven earned runs on six hits in three innings of work. He recorded three strikeouts and surrendered two walks.

Paul Voelker entered in relief and delivered six hitless innings without allowing a run. Voelker also fanned three and walked two. Hunter Cervenka entered to pitch the seventh inning in his first appearance as a Mud Hen. Cervenka delivered one scoreless inning allowing no hits and one walk while striking out two in his Toledo debut.

In the bottom half of the seventh inning, Dawel Lugo recorded a base hit to get the Hens offense started. Jason Krizan then singled to center and moved Lugo to third. Chad Huffman then drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Edwin Espinal grounded into a 1-2-3 double play to end the inning.

Kevin Comer came on to pitch the eighth inning replacing Cervenka. Comer pitched a shutout inning allowing one hit.

In the eighth inning, Kade Scivicque led off with a line drive single to center field. With two outs in the inning, Ronny Rodriguez singled to left to move Scivicque into scoring position. Jim Addcui then roped a single into left field to load the bases. Lugo hit a chopper to the pitcher and the inning ended without a run.

Kevin Chapman came in to pitch the ninth inning for Toledo. Chapman allowed one hit and no runs while striking out one in the inning. In the bottom of the ninth, Huffman blasted his seventh home run of the season over the left field wall to avoid the shutout. Scivicque and Mahtook hit back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second with two outs.

What's Next:

The first place Mud Hens will take on the second place Indians tomorrow evening with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

- The Mud Hens have eight pitchers with three or more wins this season.

- Christin Stewart recently moved up the Detroit prospect list to number five.
