Gwinnett Stripers News Release
NORFOLK, Va. - Kolby Allard's streak of consecutive quality starts for the Gwinnett Stripers ended at 10 Tuesday night as the Norfolk Tides took game three of a four-game set by a score of 3-2 at Harbor Park.
With the loss, the Stripers have now lost five games in a row.
Norfolk jumped on the board first as Steve Wilkerson launched a one-out solo homer (4) to right off Allard in the bottom of the first for a 1-0 lead.
The Stripers tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth as Michael Reed led off with a double to right off Norfolk starting pitcher Joely Rodriguez. He moved to second on a ground out to first by Dustin Peterson and scored on a single to left by Rio Ruiz.
The Stripers moved out in front 2-1 in the top of the sixth as Reed led off with a homer to right (4) off reliever Reid Love.
However, in the bottom of the sixth, Allard ran into trouble. He gave up a one-out double to left to Wilkerson, which was the first hit for the Tides since the bottom of the first. DJ Stewart walked to put two on, and with two outs, Pedro Alvarez hit a long fly to right that dropped just out of the reach of both Reed and Peterson in front of the wall. Both Wilkerson and Stewart scored on the play to push the Tides ahead 3-2, the eventual final.
Allard (L, 5-3) pitched well, but saw his quality start streak come to an end. He went 5.2 innings with four hits, three earned runs and two walks allowed, and matched his season-high with eight strikeouts. Between the bottom of the first and the bottom of the sixth, Allard allowed only one runner to reach base, and at one time retired 11 in a row. Elian Leyva was solid out of the bullpen with 2.1 scoreless innings of work with one walk and one strikeout.
Rodriguez went 4.0 innings with three hits, one earned run and three strikeouts. Love (W, 1-0) got the win in this first Triple-A game with 4.0 innings, three hits, one earned run, one walk and one strikeout. Ryan Meisinger (S, 1) worked a 1-2-3 top of the ninth with two strikeouts for the save.
