Louisville Bats News Release
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Louisville Bats (29-44) dropped the middle game of a three-game series against the Columbus Clippers (38-38) at Huntington Park by a 5-3 score. The game was preceded by a 20-minute rain delay.
The Bats wasted no time after the delay, with Mason Williams doubling as the first batter of the game, the fourth straight time that he's started a contest with a hit out of the leadoff spot. Dilson Herrera knocked Williams in with a line drive single, and Steve Selsky knocked in Phillip Ervin with an RBI groundout to give the Bats a 2-0 lead in the first.
Right-hander Domingo Tapia started for Louisville in place of scheduled starter, left-hander Justin Nicolino (3-5, 4.89), who pitched out of the bullpen directly after. Tapia went 2.0 innings, retiring all six Clippers he faced with one strikeout. Nicolino, who got the loss in his first relief appearance since October 1, 2017 with the Miami Marlins, went 4.1 innings, surrendering five runs, four earned, on seven hits, while walking and striking out two batters on 83 pitches, 53 strikes.
All of the Clippers' runs came in the sixth and seventh innings, powered by a four-run bottom of the sixth which gave Columbus its first lead of the series. Greg Allen and Yandy Diaz hit RBI doubles, with the Clippers tying the game on a throwing error by Nicolino, before ultimately taking a 4-3 lead on a sacrifice fly by former Bat, Adam Rosales.
The Bats would threaten in the seventh, loading the bases with one out, but failed to score. Left-hander Jeff Beliveau recorded the save for Columbus.
The Bats and Clippers are back at it Wednesday night for the series finale, as the Bats look to win their first back-to-back road series in the rubber match tomorrow. Right-hander Jose Lopez (3-7, 4.76) is set to go for Louisville, while Columbus is expected to counter with left-hander Adam Wilk (2-6, 3.98) with first pitch at 7:05 p.m.
