Louisville Bats Notes: June 26

June 26, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Louisville Bats News Release

BATS DOMINATE OPENER: Louisville defeated Columbus by an 11-2 score Monday night, with right-hander Robert Stephenson dealing and the offense coming through with its second double-digit run game in its last 3 games. The Bats also tied a season-high 6 runs scored in one inning, putting up a six-spot in the top of the fourth en route to the series-opening victory.

AGAINST COLUMBUS: The Bats and Clippers meet for the fourth of seven series this season, with the first 3 series taking place in Louisville. LOU is 5-6 against COL this season, outscoring the Clip Show 58-51 after Monday night's 11-2 win. The series opener was the first matchup between the clubs at Huntington Park, making it the latest into a season that the two teams had gone without playing at one's ballpark since the clubs have been in the IL West division starting in 1998. This season is also the first time the teams haven't exchanged home/road series in the opening month of the season alone since 2008.

KOLUMBUS KLIPPERS: RHP Robert Stephenson went 6.0 innings in Monday's 11-2 win, giving up one earned run, five hits, one homer, three walks, while striking out 11 on 98 pitches (63 strikes).

Louisville's last FOUR 10+ strikeout games have all come against Columbus:

- Stephenson's 11 strikeouts tied LHP Cody Reed 's 11 whiffs on June 12 for most by a Louisville pitcher this season.

- Reed's 11 K's surpassed Stephenson's 10 strikeouts on April 11 vs. Columbus for the single-game high for LOU this season. The 11 K's became the first 11+ K game by a LOU pitcher since RHP Keyvius Sampson struck out 12 Toledo Mud Hens on June 2, 2016.

- The most recent 10+ K performance by a Bats pitcher prior to the 3 outings this season was Amir Garrett , who struck out 10 Clippers in game 2 of a doubleheader last season on September 3.

EASY AS 1-2-3: The three batters atop the Bats' lineup Monday all registered 3 hits, the first time that's happened all season. Mason Williams, Phillip Ervin and Dilson Herrera went a combined 9-for-14 (.643) with 6 runs, 2 doubles, 6 RBI and one walk. It's the first time the 1-2-3 batters in the lineup all registered 3+ hits for Louisville since 3 years ago to the exact date (June 25, 2015), when Irving Falu (4-for-5), Jason Bourgeois (4-for-6) and Hernan Iribarren (3-for-5) all registered 3+ hits as the 1-2-3 batters in a 15-2 road win over Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

JOY DIVISION: The Bats' 11-2 win over the Clippers last night marked their first of 18 consecutive contests against their International League West division counterparts. It's Louisville's longest streak against strictly IL West clubs in a season since the Bats played 21 straight games against divisional opponents to begin the 2015 campaign, taking up the whole month of April.

GOING DOWN THE ONLY ROAD I'VE EVER KNOWN: The Bats have struggled away from Louisville Slugger Field overall this season with their 9-21 record through their first 30 road games, but have now won 4 of their last 5 road games. LOU took two of three from the Toledo Mud Hens from June 15-17, earning its first road series win of 2018. With a win tonight or Wednesday, the Bats would have back-to-back road series wins for the first time since July-August 2017, when they took two of three at Buffalo (7/28-7/30) and two of three at Durham (8/7-8/9).

10+ RUNS IN 2 OF 3: After reaching double digits in the run column just once (W 10-2, 5/23 at IND) through the team's first 69 games of the season, the Bats have now scored 10 or more in 2 of their last 3 games. It's the first time they have done that since June 25-26, 2015, when they won back-to-back games by 15-2 (at SWB) and 11-5 (at LHV) scores.
