Columbus Clippers News Release
The Columbus Clippers were hammered by the Louisville Bats tonight at Huntington Park to the tune of 11 runs on 15 hits, dropping game one of the three-game set, 11-2.
11,000 fans consumed over 22,000 hot dogs on Sugardale Dime-a-Dog Night, but that was the only big number Columbus would put up in the midst of a Louisville hit parade.
Louisville started what would be a long night for the Clippers in the first inning when Philip Ervin gave the Bats a 1-0 lead with a RBI double.
They tacked on two more in the third, first with a Dilson Herrera RBI double, followed by a Steve Selsky RBi single, making it 3-0.
Louisville broke things open in the top of the fourth, scoring six runs off Clippers' starter Michael Peoples. Mason Williams started off with a two-run single, which Ervin backed up with a RBI single to extend the lead to 6-0. After that, Herrera roped a RBI single and Hernan Iribarren added a two-run single, making it 9-0.
The Clippers plated one in the home half of the fourth, courtesy of Yu Chang's fifth homerun of the season, a solo shot over the right field wall. It would be Louisville starter Robert Stephenson's only blemish of the day.
Ahead 9-1, Josh VanMeter gave Stephenson even more run support with a solo blast in the fifth, pulling out to a 10-1 advantage.
Stephenson shut down the Clippers through the sixth before being pulled. When all was said and done, he'd tossed six five-hit innings, giving up just the one run. He walked three and struck out eleven.
Louisville added one more run on a wild pitch in the seventh inning, making it 11-1.
The Clippers would strike for the final time in the bottom of the eighth with a man on third. Chand dunked a broken-bat single into left to score Yandy Diaz, who had reached on a double, to pull within 11-2.
The Bats would quiet the Clippers after that to secure the game-one victory.
The teams will play game two tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. at Huntington Park.
