Clinton LumberKings News Release

Comstock Park, MI - Stress-free wins have been few and far between for the LumberKings in 2013, but Wednesday was one of those nights. Clinton scored a pair of runs in the first inning and never looked back as they beat the West Michigan Whitecaps, 6-1, at Fifth Third Ballpark.

In the opener of a three-game series and six-game road trip, Clinton received stellar pitching from starter Charles Kaalekahi and the beleaguered bullpen. Kaalekahi was staked to a 3-0 lead and pitched five solid innings to grab his third win of the year.

The scoring started early as Taylor Ard ripped a two-run double to the right-center gap in the top of the first inning. They added a single tally in the second as Gaby Guerrero, Janelfry Zorrilla and Tim Lopes all collected hits.

Guerrero doubled to start the frame, extending his hitting streak to 14 games. Zorrilla singled to put runners at the corners and Lopes followed with an RBI single to make it 3-0.

The Whitecaps' lone run came on a run-scoring base hit by second baseman Harold Castro in the bottom of the second.

Clinton extended the lead to 5-1 in the fifth inning when Marcus Littlewood hit a sacrifice fly and Jordy Lara pitched in with a run-scoring base hit.

The bullpen of Blake Holovach, Richard Vargas and Oliver Garcia combined for four scoreless innings.

The series continues Thursday in Comstock Park. Clinton sends right-hander Victor Sanchez (1-3, 3.08) to the mound against Whitecaps' right-hander Montreal Robertson (2-3, 4.81). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM ET at Fifth Third Ballpark.
