CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Kernels fell to the Daytona Dragons, 12-6, on Wednesday night. The game was the first of a six-game home stand against Midwest League Eastern Division opponents.

Dayton led off the game with three straight singles followed by a huge dent in the scoreboard off the bat of Jesse Winker. The left fielder powered a grand slam home run to put the Dragons up 4-0.

Sammy Diaz recorded an RBI single in the 2nd that scored Joe Hudson, who singled to lead off the inning. Dayton scored for a third straight inning via a wild pitch in the 3rd, putting the Dragons up 6-0. Dayton took a 7-0 advantage when Hudson's RBI double in the 5th scored Daniel Pigott, who also doubled.

The Kernels got on the board in the 6th as J.D. Williams singled and later scored on a RBI double off the wall by Dalton Hicks. A couple pitches later, Travis Harrison singled home Hicks to narrow the deficit to 7-2.

The Dragons pushed across five in the 7th with Pigott, Hudson, Beau Amaral, Diaz, and Jeff Gelalich all scoring. The highlight of the inning was a bases-clearing double by Seth Mejias-Brean, which broke open the contest to increase the Dragons' lead to 12-2.

Michael Quesada scored to tighten the Kernels deficit to 12-3 in the 6th, with J.D. Williams reaching on an error. Quesada extended the inning with a two-out single. Two RBI singles by Pineda and Hicks and an RBI double by Williams in the 9th narrowed the deficit to 12-6.

Mejias-Brean finished 5-for-5 with three RBI. Hudson went 3-for-4 while Gelalich and Diaz each went 3-for-6 with two runs scored. All but one starter in the Dayton lineup recorded at least one hit. Williams and Harrison recorded multi-hit games for the Kernels, each finishing 2-for-4.

Kernels starter Christian Powell (2-3) exited after three, allowing six runs on nine hits while walking three and striking out three. The right-hander threw 80 pitches, one of those being a wild pitch that pushed across a run for Dayton.

Alex Muren was first out of the bullpen, also throwing three innings. Muren allowed one run on five hits while not walking or striking out any batters. Caleb Brewer followed Muren, and Brewer allowed five runs on four hits in two innings. David Hurlbut pitched a scoreless 9th.
