LANSING, Mich. - In a game that took just one hour and 53 minutes, Javier Avendano outdueled Kyle Helisek as the Lansing Lugnuts (4-15, 36-52) squeaked out a 1-0 win over the Peoria Chiefs (9-10, 47-39) on Wednesday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.
The Lugnuts have now won two straight following the 10-game losing streak.
With a one-run lead in hand, Avendano (Win, 6-6) carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before it was finally broken up by a leadoff single off the bat of Ildemaro Vargas. In total, Avendano tossed seven scoreless innings, allowing just two hits. He issued three walks and struck out five Peoria hitters.
Avendano outpitched Helisek (Loss, 6-4), who also tossed seven strong innings. Helisek allowed one run - earned - on eight Lansing hits. The left-hander did not issue a single walk while striking out four.
The only run of the ball game was scored in the home half of the second inning.
Santiago Nessy doubled into the left field corner with one out, moved to third on an infield single and then scored on a fielder's choice by Carlos Ramirez.
Ian Kadish and Arik Sikula combined to pitch the eighth and ninth innings scoreless to keep the shutout intact. Sikula converted on his 10th save of the season.
Game two of the three-game series is set for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch on a Labatt Blue Light Thirsty Thursday. Lansing will give the ball to left-hander Alonzo Gonzalez (2-9, 5.59) to take on Peoria right-hander Joe Cuda (4-4, 4.39).
