July 10, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Dayton Dragons News Release
Cedar Rapids, Iowa-Jesse Winker belted a first inning grand slam home run and Seth Mejias-Brean tied a club record with five hits as the Dayton Dragons defeated the Cedar Rapids Kernels 12-6 on Wednesday night. The Dragons evened their second half record at 10-10 while Cedar Rapids fell to 13-6. The game was the first of a six-game road trip for the Dragons.
The Dragons scored four runs before an out was recorded in the first inning. Beau Amaral, Sammy Diaz, and Jeff Gelalich each collected line drive singles to load the bases, and Winker followed with a home run to right-center field to make it 4-0. The homer was Winker's 10th of the season and the second grand slam of the year for the Dragons.
The Dragons added single runs in the second, third, and fifth innings to build their lead to 7-0. Cedar Rapids scored two runs in the sixth to make it 7-2, but the Dragons answered with five in the seventh to take a commanding 12-2 lead. The key hit in the five-run frame was a three-run double by Mejias-Brean, his fifth hit of the night.
Mejias-Brean became the eighth player in Dragons history to collect five hits in a game and the first since Ronald Torreyes in 2011. He picked up two doubles and three singles on the night.
Dragons starting pitcher Sal Romano (6-7) worked six innings and pitched well to earn the win. He allowed five hits and two runs with no walks and five strikeouts.
The Dragons finished with 18 hits to match their season-high for 2013. They also matched season highs in doubles with five and extra base hits with six. Their 18 hits all came within the first seven innings. Along with Mejias-Brean's five hits, Diaz, Gelalich, and Joe Hudson each had three. Tanner Rahier had one hit to extend his hitting streak to nine straight games. Amaral had three walks to go along with one hit.
The Dragons battle Cedar Rapids again on Thursday at 7:35 p.m. (EDT). Ismael Guillon (4-6, 5.68) will start for Dayton against Cedar Rapids' Josue Montanez (3-1, 3.55). All Dragons games can be heard on WONE Radio (980 AM) and via the internet at daytondragons.com and wone.com.
