Peoria Chiefs News Release

Lansing, MI- The Peoria Chiefs offense scored 17 runs on 30 hits over their last two games against the best team in the Midwest League but managed just two singles and no runs in a 1-0 loss to the now 4-15 Lansing Lugnuts on Wednesday night. The loss drops the Chiefs back under .500 in the second half at 9-10 while they are 47-39 overall.

Chiefs starter Kyle Helisek got a double play to escape the bottom of the first but the Chiefs couldn't repeat the feat in the second. Santiago Nessy doubled to left with one out and moved to third as former Bradley University star Jason Leblebijian beat Helisek to the bag for an infield single to first. Helisek got Carlos Ramirez to ground to short but after a force out at second, Breyvic Valera dropped the ball before he could throw to first as Nessy scored.

Trailing 1-0, the Chiefs struggled to get any base runners against former St. Louis Cardinals farmhand Javier Avendano. Ildemaro Vargas walked with one out in the third but was left at third. Patrick Wisdom walked to start to the fifth before Valera bounced into a double play. Vargas picked up the Chiefs first hit of the game to start the sixth but Gerwuins Velazco bunted into a 5-4-3 double play.

The Chiefs best scoring chance came in the seventh as Helisek continued to match Avendano zero for zero. CJ McElroy led off with a single to center and moved to second on a wild pitch. With their first runner in scoring position in the game, Jacob Wilson popped to shortstop and Jordan Walton flew out to left. McElroy moved to third on another wild pitch but Wisdom struck out swinging to end the inning.

The relief combo if Ian Kadish and Arik Sikula kept the Chiefs off the basepaths over the final two innings. Kadish got three straight ground ball outs in the eighth and Sikula got two flyouts before McElroy bounced to second to end the game.

Helisek (6-4) allowed one run on eight hits over seven innings in his second straight tough-luck loss. He struck out four and did not issue a walk. Brady Adamek made his Chiefs debut with a perfect eighth inning that included two strikeouts.
