Burlington Bees News Release

The Burlington Bees scored two runs in the ninth, but needed three to tie, as the Great Lakes Loons took the first game by a 5-4 final on Wednesday night at Dow Diamond.

Burlington (31-53, 5-14) entered Wednesday's contest with an 0-31 record when trailing after eight innings, but made things very interesting against Luis Meza in the ninth.

Meza got two quick outs to start the inning, but after surrendering a single to Anthony Bemboom and walks to Chance Ross and Garrett Cannizaro, there was hope amongst the Bees. Chevy Clarke delivered a two-run single to make it a 5-4 score with two outs. The Loons (41-49, 14-6) turned to Craig Stem to get the final out, and he was able to get Pedro Toribio to ground out to end the game.

The Bees defense struggled on Wednesday, commiting four errors, which led to five unearned runs. Nic DellaTorre (0-2) went a season-high five innings, running into trouble in the second and fifth. In the second, Aaron Miller singled to start the frame and advanced to second on a walk to Jeremy Rathjen with one out. Jose Capellan hit a double play ball that went under the glove of Sherman Johnson, allowing Miller to score. Robbie Garvey knocked a two-out two-run single to pull the Loons ahead 3-0.

Anthony Bemboom blasted his sixth home run of the year to put the Bees on the board in the fifth. That would be the only run that Burlington would muster against Geoff Brown (8-1), who delivered five innings of one-run ball in relief of Julio Urias. Urias was pulled after one scoreless inning.

In the fifth, Corey Seager doubled home two runs to put the Loons ahead 5-1 after five innings. Christopher O'Grady allowed the Bees to get back into the game with his three scoreless frames.

Burlington will take on Great Lakes in the second game of the series on Thursday night. Reid Scoggins will be on the bump for the Bees, while Los Angeles Dodgers 1st-round pick, Chris Anderson, will take the ball for the Loons at 7:05 eastern time.
