South Bend, Ind. - Josh Collmenter took the hill at Coveleski Stadium on Independence Day and delighted the home crowd by nearly throwing a no-hitter in South Bend's 2-0 victory over the Lansing Lugnuts Friday night.

Collmenter (9-4), a former Central Michigan University hurler, tossed the first seven innings of the game and did not allow a hit to Lansing. He faced the minimum in his outing, as only Darin Mastroianni reached against him by drawing a walk in the third. Mastroianni was quickly thrown out on a stolen base attempt on the next play. Collmenter fanned seven in the start as well.

Collmenter was lifted after the seventh for Clay Zavada, who gave up a single to Matt Liuzza on the first pitch that he threw.

The Silver Hawks received just enough offense in the game, as Sean Coughlin drove home both runs in the game.

Coughlin had an RBI double in the fourth off of Luis Perez that made it 1-0. He later added a run scoring single in the eighth off of reliever Frank Gailey that pushed across an insurance run, making it 2-0.

Perez (3-6) pitched well for Lansiing but took the loss. He gave up just one run on seven hits in the outing, while fanning six.

Jeff Dietz got his third save of the season for the Silver Hawks by tossing the ninth.

Lansing (49-37, 10-6) finished the road trip 4-4, losing the final two games via shutout. The Lugnuts will return home Saturday night to open a three-game series with the Great Lakes Loons. A pair of left-handers are scheduled to pitch. Marc Rzepczynski (3-2, 2.03) will make the start for the Lugnuts, while Victor Garate (4-3, 1.96) will get the call for the Loons.
