Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Quad Cities River Bandits celebrated the Fourth of July with a bang on Friday night, scoring three runs in the first inning and cruising to a 9-2 victory over the Cedar Rapids Kernels in front of 5,577 screaming fans at Modern Woodmen Park.

Quad Cities (8-8, 41-39) salvaged a series split with the win, taking their second straight game to improve their record to an even .500 since the All-Star break. Cedar Rapids (10-6, 42-42) was held in check by River Bandits' starter Nick Additon while Brett Wallace, the Cardinals' 2008 first-rounder, picked up his first professional RBI and Pete Kozma, the Redbirds' top selection in 2007, registered his second four-hit game of the year.

In front of another spectacular crowd, the River Bandits fed off the fans' energy and shot out of the gates with authority.

Adron Chambers led off the bottom of the first inning by ripping a liner down the right field line and burning around the bases for a triple. On the next two pitches, Kozma and Francisco Rivera each smacked run-scoring doubles, and later in the frame Tommy Pham added a sacrifice fly to put Quad Cities ahead, 3-0.

One inning later Kozma checked back in with his second hit and second RBI on his way to a 4-for-5 night. The 18th overall pick in the 2007 draft singled up the middle with two away to drive home Nick Peoples for a 4-1 lead.

After a solo homer by Ryan Groth made it a 4-2 ballgame, the Bandits went back to work with single runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings.

Paul Vazquez doubled in a run in the third, part of a 3-for-5, two-RBI night for the River Bandits catcher. In the fourth inning Wallace notched his first professional run batted in, lacing a single through the right side that plated Kozma. Vazquez added a run-scoring single in the bottom of the fifth as Quad Cities stretched their lead to 7-2.

That was plenty of run support for Additon (7-2), who earned his team-high seventh win of the year with six more strong innings. The 20-year-old lefty from Florida allowed two runs - one earned - on five hits while fanning three and walking one.

The River Bandits put on the finishing touches in the bottom of the eighth. Pham capped a two-hit, two-RBI night by launching a leadoff homer to left that banged off the Hayman's Ace Hardware sign sitting atop the left field berm. Peoples followed with a single and eventually scored on D'Marcus Ingram's sacrifice fly to reach the 9-2 final.

Michael Davitt (2-6) suffered the loss for the Kernels, roughed up for seven runs - six earned - on 11 hits in 4.2 innings.
