Altoona Curve News Release
RICHMOND, Va. - Liover Peguero hit his sixth home run of the season, a solo shot in the eighth inning, but the Richmond Flying Squirrels used two Marco Luciano home runs to defeat the Curve, 11-2, at The Diamond on Saturday night.
Richmond scored five runs in the second inning and six runs in the eighth to cap their scoring. Luciano hit a grand slam in the second off Curve starter Aaron Shortridge and followed the act with a two-run home run to center field off Bear Bellomy in the eighth.
Shortridge got through the first inning of his start before he allowed all five runs in the second. He left after 1.2 innings, allowing three hits with a season-high matching four walks and two strikeouts. Nick Dombkowski followed with three scoreless frames, allowing just one hit with three strikeouts.
Omar Cruz spun together 2.1 scoreless innings in his longest outing of the season to follow Dombkowski before Bellomy allowed six runs in the eighth on five hits. Simon Whiteman and Wade Meckler each had two-run doubles before Luciano's second home run put the game further out of reach. The nine-run margin of defeat is the largest for Altoona this season.
Peguero's home run came off Spencer Bivens in the eighth inning, a lead-off solo shot to make it a 5-1 game. Andres Alvarez then drew a walk before Richmond called upon Parker Dunshee out of the bullpen. Dunshee walked Matt Gorski and hit Mason Martin with a pitch to load the bases before Jacob Gonzalez was also hit by a pitch to force home a run. Altoona was then set down in order to strand the bases loaded.
Peguero and Dylan Shockley each had three hits in the loss. Altoona remains in sole possession of first place in the Southwest Division with a 29-25 record after an Erie loss to Bowie tonight.
Altoona finishes its six-game series with the Richmond Flying Squirrels, Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, on Sunday afternoon at 1:35 p.m. Altoona will send RHP Kyle Nicolas to the mound to face Richmond's RHP Landon Roupp.
