Altoona Curve News Release
BOWIE, Md. - Early offense and strong starting pitching was the winning combination for the Bowie Baysox in a 9-2 victory over the Altoona Curve on Thursday at Prince George's Stadium.
The Curve (64-65, 28-33) were held scoreless until Logan Hill clubbed a two-out, solo homer to the right of center against Baysox (71-58, 41-20) starter Zac Lowther (Win, 13-7) in the sixth inning. Lowther worked around a pair of two-out hits during the first two frames and escaped a bases-loaded, one-out situation in the third.
Lowther bounced back from a tough-luck loss in Altoona for his Eastern League-best 13th win of 2019.
Bowie's batters provide all the run support Lowther needed by scoring two times in each of the first two innings against Curve starter Pedro Vasquez (Loss, 7-4). Baysox leadoff hitter Cedric Mullins worked a nine-pitch at bat that resulted in a solo homer before three more singles led to another score. In the second frame, Vasquez labored over 33 pitches to swell his pitch count to 58 while Bowie plated two more on three hits and two walks.
In his first start following eight shutout frames against the Baysox in Altoona during his previous outing, Vasquez was pulled after two innings. He allowed seven hits, four runs and walked two without a strikeout.
Angel German took over in the third and worked a 1-2-3 third inning. However, Bowie made German pay for a one-out walk and hit batter when Anderson Feliz doubled off the top of the left-center wall that scored two. Bowie's lead increased to 7-0 when the next hitter, Carlos Perez, singled in Feliz for a three-run inning.
Outfielder-turned-left-handed reliever Elvis Escobar compiled two scoreless innings over the fifth and sixth. Mason McCoy tripled with one out in the fifth but Escobar kept him planted at third with a groundout to the mound followed by an inning-ending grounder to third.
Matt Eckelman fired a scoreless seventh frame before infielder Jesse Medrano worked the eighth. Two doubles, one walk and a hit batter led to two runs for Bowie, including another RBI double for Feliz.
Feliz led all hitters in the game with a 4-for-5 performance highlighted by two doubles and four RBIs.
Bralin Jackson (2-for-4) and Adrian Valerio (2-for-4) each notched multi-hit games and teamed up in the seventh for Altoona's second score. Jackson smoked a double to left with one out and scored two pitched later on Valerio's second single of the game. Jared Oliva reached base four times one a first-inning single, two walks and was hit by a pitch in the ninth.
The series continues Friday at 7:05 p.m. with the Curve turning to left-hander Sean Brady (3-12, 4.78) in the start against Bowie lefty Alex Wells (8-3, 2.40).
