Hartford Yard Goats News Release
HARTFORD - Deuces and stellar pitching by the Reading Fightin' Phils helped to sink the Hartford Yard Goats, 2-1, Thursday night, before a capacity crowd of 6,850 at Dunkin' Donuts Park. Both Reading runs scored on sacrifice flies. The loss dealt a blow to the Yard Goats' slim playoff hopes, dropping Hartford (29-31) 6 ?1/2 games behind first place Reading (36-25) with 12 games to play.
The attendance marked the 22nd consecutive sellout and 44th of the season. It was also the 26th standing-room-only crowd of the year.
The Fightins' had the unusual line of two runs, two hits, two errors and two men left on base, but it was enough to sink the Goats, despite outstanding Hartford pitching. Ashton Goudeau (3-3), making his third start since coming off the IL, allowed two runs, one earned, in three innings of work. He gave up just one hit, but it proved costly.
Reading scored an unearned run in the first on a lead-off single by Luke Williams, who promptly stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on Alec Bohm's sacrifice fly. The Fightins' tacked on a run in the third without a hit. Henri Lartigue was hit by a pitch, stole second, moved to third on a sac bunt and scored on Williams' sacrifice fly.
Heath Holder entered for Hartford and threw five innings of one-hit relief, walking one and striking out a season-high eight. Rayon Gonzalez retired Reading in order in the ninth.
Meanwhile, Reading starter Spencer Howard (1-0) was just as tough in notching his first AA win. The right-hander pitched six innings - tying a season high - allowed one unearned run on two hits. He did not yield any walks and struck out seven.
The Yard Goats tallied the run in the fourth, when Mylz Jones was hit by a pitch, stole second, moved to third on a fly out and scored on an error by the third baseman, Bohm.
Relievers Jeff Singer, Jakob Hernandez and Addison Russ then closed it out for Reading, with Russ recording his 19th save, retiring Hartford in order in the ninth.
Bret Boswell's double and singles by Colton Welker and Vince Fernandez accounted for Hartford's hits. Cornelius Randolph and Williams had the Reading safeties.
Game two of the four-game series is Friday at 7:05 p.m. RHP Brandon Gold (10-5) will pitch for Hartford against LHP David Parkinson for Reading. The game will be broadcast on News Radio 1410 AM, on 100.9 FM, in Spanish on 1120 AM and on the internet on newsradio1410.iheart.com. A celebration of the life of Roberto Clemente is scheduled and a fireworks display will follow the game. The Yard Goats will play the game as Los Chivos de Hartford.
