PORTLAND, Maine - Nick Green and three Thunder relievers combined on the team's second straight shutout while the offense clicked on all cylinders in a 7-0 win over the Portland Sea Dogs on Thursday night at Hadlock Field.
The shutout was the 14th of the season for the Thunder (32-30, 70-58), third-most in the Eastern League. Additionally, the win clinched the Thunder's fourth consecutive winning season.
Green (3-3) matched a season-high with his six innings, striking out four and allowing only four hits, all singles. The right-hander recorded 10 groundball outs and needed just 77 pitches to work through the sixth.
Greg Weissert, Brooks Kriske, and Daniel Alvarez each provided a scoreless inning of relief behind Green, and the four men combined to allow only five hits.
Thunder hitters rallied for three runs off Portland starter Daniel McGrath (6-1) in the second inning. Chris Gittens led off with a solo homer, his career-high 22nd of the season, and after a Kellin Deglan single and an Isiah Gilliam double, Rashad Crawford stretched the Thunder lead to 3-0 on a two-run double to right-center. Entering the game, McGrath had allowed a total of three earned runs over his previous 11 appearances, spanning 74.2 innings.
Kellin Deglan added a solo home run to lead off the fourth, his eighth of the year. After neither team scored through the next four innings, the Thunder piled on three more runs on four consecutive hits in the ninth off Sea Dogs (28-32, 55-72) right-hander Durbin Feltman, including an RBI-single by Max Burt and a two-run double by Hoy Jun Park.
Eight of the nine Thunder hitters reached base safely in the game, and four players recorded two hits each.
Your Thunder continue their road trip on Friday at 7 p.m. against the Sea Dogs. RHP Albert Abreu (5-8, 4.00) will start for the Thunder, and LHP Matt Kent (5-6, 3.86) will go for Portland. Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. on 920 AM The Jersey or online at TrentonThunder.com/Broadcast.
