Louisville Bats News Release
LOUISVILLE, KY -- Nick Martini's lead-off home run and three hits from Alejo Lopez helps lifts the Louisville Bats (29-24) over the Worcester Rex Sox (25-29) by a score of 8-6.
Worcester grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first behind a pair of base hits before Bats right hander Zack Brown (3-1, 6.95) induced an inning-ending double play to avoid any further damage. Brown turned in a solid start, covering three innings and striking two while allowing just one earned run.
Louisville leadoff man Nick Martini quickly got the Bats on the board in the bottom of the first, sending a full-count pitch deep down the right field line for his second home run of the year to tie the game at 1-1.
Consecutive RBI singles from Michael Siani and Jhonny Pereda gave the Bats a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Pereda's single extended his hitting streak to 14 games. After Martini grounded into a fielder's choice with two runners on plated another run, back-to-back walks brought home the fourth run of the inning, making the score 5-1.
Solo home runs in the fourth and seventh innings for the WooSox cut their deficit to 5-3. A walk and a base hit plated an additional run for Worcester in the top of the seventh to make the score 5-4.
Walks to Reynolds and Siani set the stage for Jhonny Pereda to bring home two more runs with a two-out double deep into the right field corner. Pereda would come around to score in the next at bat thanks to an RBI single from Alejo Lopez, extending the Bats lead back to four runs.
A walk and two base hits allowed for two more WooSox runs to come across in the top of the eighth, though they still trailed 8-6 heading into the ninth.
Louisville reliever Daniel Duarte (3-0, 3.70) tossed a clean ninth inning to secure the 8-6 win for the Bats and earn his third save of the season.
The series will continue Friday from Louisville Slugger Field with first pitch set for 7:15 p.m. ET. Brett Kennedy (1-1, 2.20) will get the ball for Louisville while Jake Faria (2-0, 5.18) is set to go for the WooSox.
