Great Lakes Loons News Release
LANSING, MI - Kyle Russell drove home three runs on three hits and Steve Smith threw five relief innings for the victory in a 7-5 Great Lakes Loons win over the Lansing Lugnuts Monday night at Oldsmobile Park.
The game's start was delayed by one hour, 18 minutes by rain.
The Loons broke a 5-5 tie with two runs in the eighth inning. Jerry Sands singled to begin the inning. Then on a hit-and-run, Esteban Lopez singled up the middle. The ball scooted past center fielder Kenny Wilson to score Sands and advance Lopez to second. After taking the lead, the Loons added another run on an RBI double by Dee Gordon.
Kyle Russell gave the Loons a first inning lead with a run-scoring double. Two innings later, he singled with one out, took third on a single by Nick Buss, and scored on a wild pitch by starter Joel Carreno.
But in the bottom of the third, Lansing tied the score on a two-run home run by Brian Van Kirk. Johermyn Chavez followed with a double, and then scored on an RBI single by Mike McDade, the Lugnuts' fourth consecutive hit of the inning.
Russell came to the Loons' rescue again in the fourth. Hatch tied the game at four with a single to right. He and Pedroza combined for a double steal, and they then scored on a two-run single by Russell.
Lansing struck for two fifth inning runs on run-scoring hits by McDade and Balbino Fuenmayor to re-tie the game.
Aaron Miller started the game and struck out eight but lasted just three innings. Smith (4-1) entered in the fourth and hurled five relief innings for the win. Cole St. Clair threw a scoreless ninth for his 12th save.
Miller, Smith and St. Clair combined to strikeout 14 Lugnut batters.
The Loons continue their eight-game roadtrip Tuesday in the state capital against the Lugnuts with the fourth game of a four-game series. Game time Tuesday is 7:05pm. The game will be broadcast in Mid-Michigan on ESPN 100.9-FM and online at Loons.com. Left-hander Geison Aguasviva (4-1, 1.51 ERA) will get a spot-start for the Loons against Lansing right-hander Chase Lirette (3-3, 5.79).
