Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - Johermyn Chavez went 4-for-4 with a tie-breaking two-run homer in the eighth inning, driving the Lansing Lugnuts (20-31; 46-74) past the Great Lakes Loons (29-23; 69-53), 5-3, on Tuesday night at Oldsmobile Park.
The victory gave the Lugnuts a split in the four-series though the Loons won the season series, 11-5.
Great Lakes starter Geison Aguasviva allowed only three hits in six splendid innings of work, each a Chavez single, in carrying a 3-1 lead to the seventh inning.
Against Loons reliever Luis Garcia, however, the Lugnuts put together consecutive singles by Justin McClanahan, Chris House, and Kenny Wilson, trimming the lead to 3-2. Chris Emanuele followed with a RBI groundout to tie the game.
An inning later, Garcia (5-3) walked Mark Sobolewski before serving up a first-pitch no-doubt shot by Chavez, the 20th home run of the season for the right fielder.
Frank Gailey (3-2) earned the victory, recording the final five Loons outs
In his debut with the Lugnuts, 2009 4th Round pick Ryan Goins went 0-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout. Goins replaced the newly-promoted Tyler Pastornicky at both shortstop and in the second slot in the lineup.
The Lugnuts are off on Wednesday before beginning a four-game road-trip in Fort Wayne at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday night. Right-hander Chad Beck (5-7, 5.99) will receive the start for Lansing against TinCaps right-hander Dexter Carter (1-1, 5.40).
