South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Comstock Park, MI - With a 9-2 win over the South Bend Silver Hawks on Tuesday night, the West Michigan Whitecaps took the four game series three games to one, and won the season series 14 games to five.
After a 1-2-3 first, South Bend starter Randy Rodriguez (LP, 4-9) ran into all sorts of trouble in the second. Rodriguez allowed five runs on four hits with two hit batters mixed in. Luis Salas and Angel Flores each had RBI singles to get the scoring started. Brent Wyatt added a two run double and Ben Guez had a sacrifice fly to account for the other runs in the inning.
The third inning wasn't much better for Rodriguez, as Billy Nowlin took the first pitch of the inning into right for a single. On a 1-1 count, Jordan Lennerton launched a home run onto the roof of a picnic area beyond the right field wall. Lennerton's 10th homer of the season put West Michigan up 7-0.
The fourth was more of the same. Two hits put runners in scoring position, with Ronnie Bourquin driving home the first run with a sacrifice fly for an 8-0 lead. Billy Nowlin's RBI double made it 9-0, and ended the night of Rodriguez.
Rodriguez was charged with nine earned runs over 3.2 innings, suffering his ninth loss of the season and his third at the hands of West Michigan.
Meanwhile, West Michigan starter Casey Crosby (WP, 10-4) cruised. Crosby allowed no runs on three hits over his 5.0 innings on the mound, earning his third win against the Silver Hawks this season.
Reynaldo Navarro had a two run double in the eighth, long after the game was out of reach, but it did extend his hitting streak to a personal high nine games. A.J. Pollock had three hits and Jake Elmore added two, with each scoring a run for the Silver Hawks.
Jordan Meaker (ND) was a bright spot for South Bend pitching, tossing 2.1 scoreless innings of relief without allowing a hit. Meaker has now thrown 9.2 consecutive scoreless innings. Victor Capellan (ND) and Justin Mace (ND) each added a scoreless inning.
After an off day Wednesday, the Silver Hawks return home to Coveleski Stadium Thursday evening to open up an eight game home stand, beginning with four against the Great Lakes Loons. Game time is scheduled for 6:30 PM Eastern Time with LHP Wade Miley (5-8, 3.98 ERA) on the mound for South Bend against Great Lakes' RHP Josh Walter (8-4, 3.45 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:10 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
