
Bees Rout Cougars And Take Series

Burlington, IA (August 18, 2009) - The Burlington Bees took three out of four from Kane County defeating the Cougars 14 Tuesday night at Community Field. The Bees put up 14 runs on 17 hits and with losses by both Clinton and Quad Cities, the Bees are tied with Quad Cities one game behind Clinton for the final playoff spot in the Western division.
The Bees opened the scoring with two runs in the second inning. Nick Francis led the inning off with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch. Juan Graterol then hit a sacrifice fly to score Francis. With two outs, Ryan Wood singled and moved to third on an error. Jason Morales then singled to score Wood, which gave the Bees a 2-0 lead.
Kane County scored one run in the top of the third to get back within one. The Bees then put it away scoring six runs in the bottom of the fourth. In the inning, the Bee sent ten batters to the plate. Yeldrys Molina had two RBI in the inning with Adrian Ortiz, Francis and Shawn Griffin each driving in one run in the frame.
The Bees continued to add to their lead scoring two runs in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. In the fifth, Jason Taylor had a two-run double scoring Wood and Ortiz. In the sixth, Griffin and Jason Morales each had RBI extra-base hits. In the eighth, Ortiz and Taylor each picked up one more RBI each.
Tim Melville got the start for the Bees and picked up the win to move to 5-7. In five innings, he allowed one run on four hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Justin Garcia pitched three scoreless innings allowing just three hits with two strikeouts for his fourth hold of the season. Barry Bowden pitched the ninth inning allowing just one hit with two strikeouts. Kane County starting pitcher Mathieu Leblanc-Poirier threw five wild pitches, which is one short of a Midwest League record.
The Bees outhit Kane County 17-8. All but one player in the Bees lineup had at least one hit and everyone had at least a hit or an RBI. Six separate Bees had more than one hit with Taylor, Wood and Morales each picking up three hits. Wood scored four runs. Taylor led the way with three RBI while Ortiz, Griffin, Morales and Molina each had two RBI.
The Bees have an off-day on Wednesday. They will open an important four-game series at Quad Cities on Thursday. Mike Lehmann is the scheduled starter First pitch is scheduled for 7:00.
