Dayton Dragons News Release
Fort Wayne, Ind.-Fort Wayne's Simon Castro fired the first no-hitter in franchise history as the TinCaps defeated the Dayton Dragons 6-0 in seven innings to complete a sweep of a suspended game doubleheader on Tuesday night.
Castro, a 21-year-old native of the Dominican Republic, allowed only one base runner over seven innings and struck out nine. Kevin Coddington was hit by a pitch in the second inning to account for the only Dayton base runner.
It was just the second time the Dragons have been no-hit in their 10-year history. Brian Wolfe of Quad City threw a no-hitter against the Dragons on August 12, 2001.
The TinCaps hit three home runs against Dayton starting pitcher J.C. Sulbaran (3-4), who suffered the loss. Sulbaran worked five innings and allowed six hits and five earned runs with four walks and four strikeouts.
Jaff Decker belted a first inning homer for the TinCaps before Allan Dykstra and Justin Baum hit back-to-back home runs in the second.
The Dragons have lost six straight games and fell to 23-28 in the second half. Still, they are only one game behind South Bend in the race for the playoff wildcard slot with 18 games to play.
In the first game, Adam Zornes belted a tie-breaking two-run home run in the sixth inning as the TinCaps came from behind to defeat the Dragons 7-4 in the completion of a suspended game from Monday. The Dragons held a 4-1 lead in the fourth inning when the game was suspended by rain on Monday night.
Fort Wayne's Brayden Drake belted a two-run home run off Dragons reliever Mark James shortly after the game resumed on Tuesday in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the Dragons lead to 4-3.
In the sixth, Allan Dykstra doubled in Jaff Decker with no one out to tie the game. Zornes followed with a two-run homer to left to give Fort Wayne a 6-4 lead. The TinCaps added another run in the eighth when Yefri Carvajal connected on a solo home run against Dragons reliever Mike Bohana.
James (1-7) took the loss. He allowed five runs on four hits in two innings of relief with one walk and one strikeout.
Dayton finished with nine hits. Alex Oliveras, Byron Wiley, and Humberto Sosa each collected two.
The Dragons host the West Michigan Whitecaps on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field. Ezequiel Infante (1-1, 2.93) will start for Dayton.
