Great Lakes Loons News Release
FORT WAYNE, IN - The Great Lakes Loons struck for five runs and 11 hits and survived a ninth-inning scare to defeat the Fort Wayne Wizards Tuesday afternoon, 5-4, and earn a series split. The game was played in front of 2,372 at Memorial Stadium.
The Loons struck for three runs in the fourth inning, with all the damage coming after there were two outs and the bases empty. The Loons recorded four straight hits by Eduardo Perez, Jaime Ortiz, Brandon Taylor and Alfredo Silverio.
Fort Wayne pulled to within a run with two in the fifth. Loons' starter Given Kutz surrendered three consecutive singles to Justin Baum, Felix Carrasco and Andy Parrino to load the bases, then retired Zach Brown and Ali Solis. But Brad Chalk followed with a bloop single to left, bringing home Baum and Carrasco.
Great Lakes added two more in the seventh inning. Taylor doubled then scored on Parker Dalton's double. Jessie Mier followed with an RBI single.
After pulling to within two runs in the eighth against reliever Miguel Sanfler, the Wizards loaded the bases with one out in the ninth. But Sanfler induced a sacrifice fly to Brown to pull Fort Wayne within one. Miguel Ramirez entered the game and struck out Ali Solis for the game's final out to record his 18th save of the season.
Kutz (4-4) started an allowed two runs in five innings for the victory. Sanfler hurled 3 2/3 relief innings, allowing one earned run. Ramirez was used for just one out.
Andrew Lambo was ejected from the game in the fourth inning by plate umpire Tom Honec for verbally defending Perez. It was his second ejection of the season.
The Loons open up a three-game homestand against the Dayton Dragons Wednesday night at Dow Diamond. Right-hander Justin Miller (4-8, 3.90 ERA) makes his first start since his near-no hitter last Friday. He will be opposed by righty Curtis Partch (3-9, 5.28). The game features a free poster giveaway, courtesy of FP Horak. The series continues Thursday on Salute to the Arts night, featuring exhibits from local artists. And on Friday, area scouts are invited to the ballpark for the game and a post-game campout on the field.
