Bandits "Add" Lefty to List of Promotions
August 12, 2008 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The Quad Cities River Bandits have been churning out prospects all season long, a trend that continued on Tuesday with the St. Louis Cardinals' promotion of ace left-hander Nick Additon to Palm Beach and the addition of starting pitcher Deryk Hooker from Johnson City.
Additon became the 18th Quad Cities player to receive a promotion this season, while Hooker will become the 54th different player to see game action with the River Bandits when he takes the mound to fill Additon's vacated rotation spot in Beloit on Wednesday. Following Tuesday's transactions, outfielder Adron Chambers is now the only member of the River Bandits' current roster that has been with the team since Opening Day.
Additon leaves the River Bandits with a 9-5 record and a 2.50 ERA. In addition to checking in seventh in the Midwest League in earned run average, the southpaw leads Quad Cities in wins, strikeouts (108), innings pitched (119), and games started (19) and has held the opposition to a paltry .214 batting average.
The 20-year-old from Florida turned in a number of dominant stretches over the course of the season, highlighted by a 31.2-inning scoreless streak that lasted from May 10-June 19 and stood at the time as the longest such streak of the season in all of Minor League Baseball. Additon went 41 days without allowing a run, going 2-0 with 29 strikeouts and just 12 hits allowed. Not only did the streak include seven consecutive scoreless outings from May 16-June 13, but it also featured a stretch of 13 consecutive hitless innings that spanned four appearances and lasted from May 24-June 6.
Replacing Additon in the starting rotation is Hooker, a talented 19-year-old right-hander from San Diego, California. A seventh-round pick by the Cardinals in the 2007 draft, Hooker skipped a level to get to the Quad Cities after being promoted from the Appalachian League. After a shaky start the teenage prospect posted a 1.10 ERA and struck out 44 over his final eight outings with Johnson City, capping his stay in short-season ball with an 11-strikeout, one-hit performance over five shutout innings on Friday.
The River Bandits roster currently stands at 25 active players, the maximum allowed by the Midwest League.
UP NEXT: The River Bandits conclude the homestand on Tuesday with a water bottle giveaway on Modern Woodmen Half-Price Night, which will also be QC Area Rotary Night to raise funds in support of Polio eradication worldwide. Bandit Wear featuring the new team name and logo is currently available by visiting the Modern Woodmen Park team store, and prorated versions of season ticket packages, mini-packages, and the popular You-Pick-10 Plan are on sale at the park or by calling (563) 3-BANDITS!
