
Kernels use big inning in 7-2 win over Burlington

August 11, 2008 - The Cedar Rapids Kernels used a five run sixth inning to break a five game losing streak to the Burlington Bees by the score of 7-2 at Community Field in Burlington on Monday night. Julio Perez got the ball rolling in the first with a 2 run homer, his 13th of the season, to score Hector Estrella and give the Kernels a quick 2-0 lead.
Kernels starter Jeremy Haynes was lifted with two outs in the third inning and didn't figure in the final decision. In 2.2 IP, he allowed a run on three hits, walked two and struck out one. Ysmael Carmona (1-3) picked up his first win as a Kernel, allowing just one hit over 2.1 scoreless innings with two walks and two strikeouts for the win.
Jeremy Moore, and Chris Rosenbaum each had 2 RBI, as Moore was 2-5 and Rosenbaum 2-3. Perez added a single to go with his home run and Hector Estrella was 2-3 with a double. Gabe Jacobo was 2-4 with an RBI as the Kernels had 10 hits in the game.
Burlington starter Ray Liotta (1-1) allowed two runs on four hits and struck out four over five innings in taking the loss. Nick Francis and David Lough each had two hits and Jason Taylor was 1-4 with a HR for the Bees.
With the win, the Kernels improve to 27-22 in the second half and 59-58 overall. They are three games behind first place Burlington and a half game ahead of Quad Cities for the second and final Western Division second half playoff spot. Burlington falls to 30-19 and 60-58 overall.
The final game of this four game series with the Bees is Tuesday night at 7 pm. The Kernels then head to Kane County where they'll resume a suspended game with the Cougars from July 7, followed by the originally scheduled game, shortened to 7 innings on Wednesday at 4 pm.
