Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Maximo Mendez hit a grand slam during a six run second inning to lead the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to a 9-2 win over the Kane County Cougars Tuesday night on Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Mendez drove in five runs in the game to lead the Rattler bats.

Wisconsin (16-35 second half, 47-70 overall) took advantage of several Kane County miscues in the bottom of the second inning to put a crooked number on the scoreboard. Joe Dunigan started the inning with a single. Alex Liddi was next and appeared to have grounded into a double play, but second baseman Larry Cobb bobbled to grounder and could only get Liddi at first. Joe White was next and his ground ball to first was kicked by Jake Smith to put runners at first and third.

Juan Diaz dropped a bloop single just in front of centerfielder Todd Johnson to drive in Dunigan with the first run of the inning. Israel Nunez was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Mendez unloaded the bases with a home run to centerfield for the grand slam and a 5-0 Wisconsin lead. Later in the inning, the Rattlers reloaded the bases and Alex Liddi drew a walk to force in a run for a 6-0 advantage.

Wisconsin kept going with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. It was Dunigan who once again started the rally. His one out triple was followed by another walk to Liddi. White singled in Dunigan and sent Liddi to third base. A wild pitch let Liddi score. Another error, the third of the night on Kane County, brought Almonte to the plate. He drove in his fifth run of the night with a single to right for a 9-0 lead.

Rattler starting pitcher Edward Paredes struggled to get through the fifth against the Cougars (22-28, 61-57) as he loaded the bases on a hit batsman, a single, and a walk. Larry Cobb's two-out, two-run single to left knocked in a pair of runs, but he was out trying to stretch the play into a double.

That single by Cobb was the last pitch thrown by Paredes on the night. The lefty topped 90 pitches on the night, but allowed two runs on four hits and struck out five to set himself up for his seventh win of the season.

Ryan Moorer worked three scoreless innings out of the Rattler pen. Reliever Joe Kantakevich closed down the Cougars with a 1-2-3 ninth.

The Rattlers begin a seven-game road trip with a game against the Peoria Chiefs at O'Brien Field in Peoria, Illinois on Wednesday night. Juan Ramirez (4-9, 4.61) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Casey Coleman (2-1, 1.88) is set to start for the Chiefs. Game time is 7:00pm.
