Lobaton Makes Odd Debut With San Diego

July 6, 2009 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release

Fort Wayne, IN - Fort Wayne alum Jose Lobaton made his MLB debut Sunday with the San Diego Padres. A catcher who hadn't played infield since his youth, Lobaton entered the Padres' game against the Dodgers in the 13th inning as a second baseman. He became the sixth Fort Wayne alum to debut in the major leagues this year and the 82nd overall to go from Fort Wayne to the major leagues.

Lobaton did not make a plate appearance; the Dodgers hit a home run just after his entering the game in the top of the 13th and went on to beat San Diego, 7-6.

Lobaton, 24, played for Fort Wayne in parts of 2005 and 2006, hitting .242 with a home run and 12 RBIs in 29 games combined. This year with Triple-A Portland, he hit .241 with 3 home runs and 8 RBIs in 39 games before being called up.

Lobaton is the 10th member of the 2006 Fort Wayne club to make it to the major leagues.

The Fort Wayne TinCaps continue a four-game homestand against the Great Lakes Loons (Class-A Los Angeles Dodgers) Monday and Tuesday at Parkview Field. Both games begin at 7:05pm.
