Former Loons Named to Futures Game

July 6, 2009 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Great Lakes Loons News Release

Former Loons players Carlos Santana and Pedro Baez have been named to the World team for the 2009 MLB All-Star Futures Game this Sunday in St. Louis. The Futures Game, which will be aired Sunday at 2pm ET on ESPN2, is a part of All-Star Sunday, leading up to Tuesday's Major League Baseball All-Star Game, also in St. Louis.

Both Santana and Baez hail from the Dominican Republic and will play on a World team managed by Cardinals third base coach Jose Oquendo. The team, consisting of players from 11 countries, will play a team of America players at the new Busch Stadium.

Santana, a catcher who played for the Loons in 2007, was traded by the Dodgers to the Indians in the deal that included Casey Blake. The switch-hitter is batting .271 with 14 home runs and 55 RBIs for Double-A Akron. At the beginning of the season, Baseball America, rated Santana as the Indians' Top Prospect.

Third baseman Baez played for the Loons last season. With the Dodgers' High-A affiliate Inland Empire, Baez is hitting .287 with nine home runs and 53 RBIs.

Former Loons pitcher Clayton Kershaw played in the game in 2007, while still a member of the Loons. He is the only other Loons player to be selected to the event.

Major League Baseball, in conjunction with the Major League Baseball Scouting Bureau, MLB.com, Baseball America and the 30 Major League Clubs, selected the 25-man rosters for each club, the U.S. Team and the World Team. Each Major League organization is represented. Players from all full-season Minor Leagues were eligible to participate.

The Great Lakes Loons are the third-year Single-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers and members of the Midwest League. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
