Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release

Fort Wayne, IN - RHP Simon Castro continued a sensational string of starting pitching for the Fort Wayne TinCaps in a 6-2 win over the Great Lakes Loons. Castro tossed five innings and allowed just one run. Meanwhile, the TinCaps scored all their runs in the middle three innings and Cole Figueroa blasted his first Fort Wayne home run.

The Loons took the lead in the top of the 2nd against Castro. Kyle Russell launched his 19th home run of the year over the right-field wall to give Great Lakes a 1-0 advantage. From there, Castro was in command, scattering a total of seven hits over five innings without a walk. He struck out eight.

The TinCaps came back in the bottom of the 4th . Drew Cumberland led off with a double, moved to third on a groundout and scored on Justin Baum's bloop single to center to tie the game. Later in the inning, Yefri Carvajal bounced into what appeared to be a sure double play, but the shortstop's throw was errant and Baum came around to score from third to give the TinCaps a 2-1 lead.

In the 5th , Robert Lara drilled a leadoff double down the left-field line. Kevin Hansen followed with a single to put runners at the corners. On a fly ball to right by Daniel Robertson, Russell fired to the plate, where Lara's slide dislodged the ball from the Loons catcher's glove to score and make it 3-1. Two batters later, Jaff Decker lifted a sacrifice fly to plate Hansen and extend the lead to 4-1.

Figueroa hammered a two-run homer in the 6th off Great Lakes reliever Robert Boothe to make it 6-1.

In the top of the 7th , Matt Wallach scored on Nick Buss's sacrifice fly to left, but Dee Gordon was retired trying to move from second to third on a nifty flip from the third baseman to the shortstop at the third-base bag to end the inning.

Castro (6-4) notched the win. Great Lakes LHP Geison Aguasviva (3-1) took the loss.

The TinCaps, winners of six in a row, improved to 55-26 overall, 10-1 in the second half. Great Lakes dipped to 44-36, 4-6 in the half.

The teams finish the four-game series Tuesday at 7:05pm at Parkview Field. Fort Wayne RHP Stiven Osuna (4-6) goes against Loons RHP Bobby Blevins (6-5).
