July 6, 2009 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Great Lakes Loons News Release
FORT WAYNE, IN - The Great Lakes Loons have now dropped three straight to the top team in all of Minor League Baseball following a 6-2 loss Monday night to the Fort Wayne TinCaps.
The TinCaps are 10-1 in the second half and a Minor League Baseball-best 55-26 overall. The Loons drop to 4-7 since the midseason respite and 44-37 overall.
The Loons scored the game's first run on a solo home run by Kyle Russell, his league-leading 19th long ball of the season.
But the TinCaps reeled off six unanswered runs with two each in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Loons starter Geison Aguasviva (3-1) was charged with four of the runs, but only one was earned, following errors on Dee Gordon and Matt Wallach in the fourth and fifth innings respectively. Cole Figueroa hit his first home run of the season in the sixth inning off reliever Robert Boothe.
The Loons added their second run on a Nick Buss sacrifice fly in the seventh.
Simon Castro (6-4) started for Fort Wayne and recorded the win with five innings of one-run baseball. He struck out eight and did not walk a batter.
Following a first half in which the Loons averaged more than five runs per game and won a franchise-best 40 games, the Loons are averaging just over two runs per game and have won just four of their first 11 in the second half. The Loons struck out 13 times in the game, bringing their second half strikeout total to 108 in 11 games.
The TinCaps go for the series sweep Tuesday at Parkview Field. Game time is 7:05pm. Right-hander Bobby Blevins (6-5, 4.33 ERA) will start for the Loons. He has recorded a 5-2 record and a 2.28 ERA over his last nine starts, lasting at least five innings in all nine games, lowering his ERA from 9.13. Right-hander Stiven Osuna (3-6, 5.27) is Fort Wayne's scheduled starter. The game will be broadcast on ESPN 100.9-FM and online at Loons.com.
The Great Lakes Loons are the third-year Single-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers and members of the Midwest League. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
