Chesapeake Baysox News Release
BOWIE, Md. - The Baysox came back to tie Tuesday night's game on two occasions, but Akron scored a run in the ninth to steal a 4-3 victory. Danny and Paco Figueroa combined to reach base five times, but the Baysox three through eight hitters were a combined 0-for-19 as Bowie falls to 64-63 on the season.
"We took the loss, but you've got to say tomorrow's another day and you'll get them tomorrow," Paco said. "Akron is the number one team for a reason, but we have to win those close games."
Former Baysox left-hander Bobby Livingston took the hill for the Aeros, his first appearance at Prince George's Stadium since being released on July 1. The left-hander allowed 10 earned runs against the Baysox on July 16 in Akron, but fared much better tonight by moving the ball around and commanding his pitches.
"I tried to take it a little more seriously today since they handed it to me last time," Livingston said. "I made some good pitches tonight that they didn't hit, last time I threw against them no matter what I threw they hit it everywhere, you know how baseball is and that is how it goes."
Akron got on the board first in the top of the second inning, as Baysox starter Tim Bascom plunked Matt McBride with a pitch to start the inning. One batter later, Carlos Rivero and John Drennen singled with one out to load the bases. Armando Camacaro followed with an RBI single, plating McBride and putting the Aeros on top. Jose Constanza looped a ball into shallow center field to score another run, but Miguel Abreu fired a strike for a force out and Bascom got Jared Goedert to fly out to end the threat.
The Baysox answered with two of their own in the bottom of the third inning. Three straight singles by shortstop Carlos Rojas and the Figueroa brothers loaded the bases with nobody out for Josh Bell. The Baysox third baseman lifted a sacrifice fly to center, plating Rojas as Danny Figueroa advanced to third. Ambiorix Concepcion followed with another sacrifice fly, plating Danny Figueroa and giving the Baysox right fielder his team leading 49th RBI of the season to tie the game at two.
The Baysox were unable to muster any more runs against their former teammate, as Livingston worked around jams but kept them off the board. The left-hander finished his night after 6.0 innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits while walking three and striking out four. Abreu said the offense was amped up to face the lefty again after getting to him the first time, but tonight they faced a much greater challenge.
"Last time we scored ten runs against him but I didn't play, so I was excited to get out there" Abreu said. "He moved his pitches around today more than last time and that is why he was more successful tonight."
Despite going 0-for-3 at the plate, Abreu turned in a sterling defensive effort in center field including a diving grab to take a hit away from Camacaro in the seventh inning. Originally an outfielder when he signed with the Orioles as a 28th round pick in 2005, Abreu said he feels like making himself more versatile will not only help the team, but help himself as he looks to climb the ladder to the big leagues.
"After the first two balls I got I was definitely more loose," Abreu said. "You just want to make the big leagues, that is always the dream and the team is looking for guys who can play infield and outfield."
Akron broke the tie in the sixth inning, breaking a string of 10 in a row retired by Bascom. McBride led off the inning with a double down the left field line, putting a runner in scoring position for Lonnie Chisenhall. The Akron third baseman followed suit with an opposite field double down the line in left, scoring McBride and putting Akron ahead 3-2.
The Baysox came back with a run in the bottom of the seventh, as Danny Figueroa led off the inning with a walk against right-hander Zach Putnam. Paco Figueroa followed with a double into left center field, as his twin brother raced around the bases to tie the score at three.
Right-hander Jim Hoey came on in relief for the Baysox, retiring the side in order in the eighth inning before running into trouble in the ninth. With Carlos Rivero on first after a single, Drennen laid down a sacrifice bunt just in front of home plate. Catcher Steve Torrealba threw to second, but Rivero slid in safely to put runners on first and second with nobody out. Camacaro laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third, and Constanza was intentionally walked to load the bases. Jared Goedert followed with a smash to short, as Rojas made a diving stab to knock the ball down. His only play was to third, as Rivero crossed the plate with the go-ahead run.
Neil Wagner came on for Akron in the ninth, striking out the side in order to earn his second save of the season. Seven of the final eight Baysox hitters struck out, as they drop to 8-17 against the Aeros this season. They now sit 3.5 games behind Reading for second place in the Southern Division.
The two teams do battle again tomorrow in a twin bill at Prince George's Stadium. RHP Steve Johnson (0-1, 3.10) goes for the Baysox in game one against RHP Jeanmar Gomez (10-3, 3.06). RHP Fredy Deza (5-5, 3.00) takes the hill in game two against RHP Connor Graham (1-2, 4.07) for the Aeros.
