Defenders Win 5-4
August 25, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Connecticut Defenders News Release
NORWICH, CT- In a matchup of the Eastern Leagues top two teams in the Northern Division, Connecticut (75-53) continued their winning ways against inter-state rival New Britain (66-62) Wednesday night at Dodd Stadium, holding onto a 5-4 victory. The two teams opened up a three game series both biding for a playoff spot.
C-Jackson Williams delivered an RBI double down the leftfield line to score SS-Brandon Crawford who led off with a single in the fifth inning and that's all Connecticut would need to capture a game one victory.
Connecticut looked to set the tempo in their first at bats and they sure did. CF-Mike McBryde drew a leadoff walk and quickly raced home on a LF-Brad Boyer RBI double. 1B-Brett Pill singled to place runners on the corners and DH-Eddy Martinez-Esteve lifted a sac fly to deep left field to plate the Defenders second run. Crawford then followed with a double as 3B-Ramon Castro pulled a two RBI single down the leftfield line to cap off a four run first inning.
New Britain responded in the second inning as SS-Steve Singleton chipped an RBI two out single to right field scoring DH-Erik Lis after back to back singles to start the inning.
The Rock Cats continued to trim into the lead in the fourth. LF-Juan Portes leadoff with a double and spent little time on second as 1B-Whit Robbins drove him in with an RBI single. Singleton reached on a fielder's choice and came around to score on a throwing error by McBryde who tried getting Singleton advancing to third on CF-Brandon Roberts's base hit.
New Britain would manage another run in the fifth as C-Wilson Ramos got hit by a pitch and 2B-Brian Dinkleman slapped an RBI single to plate him but that's as close as they would get.
The relief of LHP-Joe Paterson and closer RHP-Matt Yourkin combined to pitch four scoreless frames to close the game out and earn Yourkin his fifth save of the season.
Defenders' starter RHP-Daryl Maday (6-4) didn't have his best stuff but still managed to pitch the minimum five allowing four runs-three earned off ten hits, tying a season high. Rock Cats' starter RHP-Deolis Guerra (6-3) suffered the loss lasting six innings allowing five earned runs off of seven hits, walked one and struck out one.
The Nutmeg Showdown continues tomorrow with the Defenders' starter LHP-Madison Bumgarner (8-1) toeing the rubber against the Rock Cats' RHP-Matt Fox (9-8) in game two of the three game series. First pitch is slated for 6:35pm from Dodd Stadium.
Wednesdays are always Senior Citizen Nights courtesy of UBS Financial Services Inc. where seniors (55+) can purchase tickets for just $3 in the seating bowl as well as stroll the bases post game.
